A few months ago, we interviewed Professor Karl Morris about his journey from civil service to industry consulting, and finally to
teaching at Temple University. Today, we’re speaking
with him again under very different circumstances—he’s running for Congress this May to represent Pennsylvania’s 3rd District.
What would motivate a successful computer science professor to return to public service? Professor Morris makes a compelling case: as
technology—particularly artificial intelligence—reshapes our society, Congress has a glaring void. There are virtually no computer scientists
serving in legislative roles, yet they’re making critical decisions about our technological future.
Professor Morris wants to ensure there’s a voice in Congress with genuine technical expertise, someone who can look beyond the profit-driven
narratives from Big Tech lobbyists. For too long, he argues, Congress has been reactive, relying on tech companies to draft legislation—an
approach that may not be optimal for most citizens.
